Are you a good writer?
You have an unprecedented opportunity to truly profit from your skill by writing content on the Internet. To truly appreciate this amazing opportunity, you may need to make a paradigm shift about where the profits come from. Let me explain.
I’ve worked as a professional freelance writer for several years. Writing is a skill that is unfortunately under appreciated and under paid. Take a 500 word story in the local newspaper. I wrote many such stories for $25.00 each. Once I took into account the time it took to interview subjects and compose the article, I wasn’t even earning minimum wage.
Then I wrote three stories for a national publication and the pay was nearly ten times better. I really could make a living at this as long as I landed enough assignments.
There are of course the big time publications that pay upwards of $1,500 for a story, but those are very competitive.
Making money online writing looks even worse in terms of pay per story. The going rate for a 500 word articles is right around three to five dollars. The main reason it’s so low is because many people are willing to write for that amount. They figure they want to contribute that content anyway, so getting paid at all is a bonus. It’s no way to make a living, though.
Here’s the paradigm shift I’m talking about. Rather than seeking to get paid directly for your writing, start thinking about how you can use your writing skills to bring in a residual income, meaning content you publish pays you over and over and over again. The truth that may take a while to wrap your head around is that no one pays you for the content itself.
To explain how that works, let me tell you a story. A few years ago, a mother and her six children went to the grocery store to stock up. One of her children sneaked a package of Pokemon cards into the shopping cart. The package went through the checkout and the mother bought it without realizing it.
She made the discovery after her child had already opened the package. Unable to return it to the store, she decided to find another way to get rid of the package so as not to reward the child for sneaking the package into the shopping cart. She put the package up for sale on Ebay and wrote humorously about the incident to explain why she wanted to sell the opened package of Pokemon cards.
Needless to say, her auction was very popular and people got into bidding wars over who would get the privilege of winning the opened box of Pokemon cards. In the end she sold the cards for around $140.00!
Did this writer’s content pay her? Absolutely. Did she get paid directly for her writing? No. She had to pay the auction fees for the privilege of posting her content. But in the end it paid off.
The truly profitable way to make money online writing is to publish your content freely for the world to read. The money doesn’t come from the content directly. It comes from the money you make on your own website from the steady stream of visitors your article brings.
That’s the essence of online marketing. You target and publish your content to bring visitors to your site, and some of your visitors buy the carefully chosen affiliate products. You earn a commission from each sale.
Once you have published your article, it stays there driving a steady stream of traffic to your website every day. The more articles you publish, the more traffic you get, and the more visitors you get who turn into customers. In this way, content you have published once pays you again and again and again.
You really make money online writing by engaging in Internet marketing. To get started, all you need is some good training–Internet marketing is a real occupation with a real skill set–a website, a product and lots of targeted content.
